The utility group belongs to the German Callax group (Callax Holding, Düsseldorf), which in turn is part of the Dutch Callax group. This group of companies also includes the wind turbine manufacturer Amperax, which continues the development and manufacture of the earlier Prokon wind turbine.
Īll three companies (Stromio, gas.de and Grünwelt Wärmestrom) transfer their profits through a profit transfer agreement to Universal Utility Investment GmbH & Co. Since 2015, Grünwelt Wärmestrom GmbH has also been offering low-tariff electricity for heat pumps and night storage heating.

Stromio and gas.de joined the Energy Arbitration Board as full members in October 2013. In late summer 2012, Stromio offered electricity tariffs to small business customers with an annual consumption of up to 100 MWh for the first time. The tariffs are certified by TÜV Nord and partly by the ok-power label. Stromio and gas.de have been offering green electricity and green gas under the Grünwelt Energie sales brand since 2011. In September 2010, nationwide gas sales began via gas.de Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH.
In 2011 the seat was finally moved to Kaarst. In 2010, Stromio initially relocated to Düsseldorf. The first customers were supplied with electricity from November 1, 2009. In August 2009 the nationwide distribution of electricity tariffs began.
The company was founded on Februwith its headquarters in Münster.
